Horror fans, get ready to break out those wallets because Paramount is bringing several genre classics home in truly glorious fashion. It just so happens that FANGORIA readers will be interested in this one as well. The studio has announced Paramount Scares – Volume 2, which will pick up right where last year’s Volume 1 left off. As with that collection, Paramount has packaged several films together in 4K Ultra HD with impressive packaging and lots of extra goodies.
Volume 2 is due to hit shelves on October 1, just in time for the Halloween season. Aside from 4K UHD versions of four movies from Paramount’s library, it also includes a collector’s edition of FANGORIA (pictured below). Buyers will also get patches, a pin, a poster and a sticker. Not to mention one heck of a box to add to the ol’ physical media shelf. As for the movies? The lineup includes…
Breakdown (1997)
Friday the 13th: Part 2 (1981)
Orphan: First Kill (2022)
World War Z (2013)
That’s a varied and unique lineup with a pair of sequels, an underappreciated ‘90s thriller and one of the most expensive horror movies ever made bundled together. Volume 1 featured a similarly varied lineup including Rosemary’s Baby, Pet Sematary, Smile and Crawl. Volume 2 is currently listed for $69.99 on Amazon, with pre-orders available as we speak. Considering the price of a single 4K movie these days, that’s a reasonable price for what you’re getting, in my humble opinion.
In the era of streaming dominance, it is more than a little nice to see Paramount paying so much attention to a physical media release. This goes far beyond slapping some new art on a steelbook to help something standout on a Walmart shelf. Much like this year’s stellar Universal Classic Monsters Limited Edition Collection box set, Paramount is rolling out the red carpet for these movies. That’s certainly worth celebrating.
Whether or not we’re going to get a Volume 3 remains to be seen. One imagines that if this one sells well, that will be a matter of when, not if. Paramount certainly has plenty of horror titles in its decades-old library to pull from. Paranormal Activity maybe? Cloverfield? Maybe even another Stephen King adaptation like Silver Bullet? The possibilities are endless.
Paramount Scares – Volume 2 arrives on October 1. Those who are interested can pre-order a copy now from Amazon.
