Following the news that Takashi Yamazaki‘s Godzilla Minus One is finally available for 4K and Blu-ray purchase Stateside comes the exciting announcement that Godzilla Minus Color, the monochromatic version faithful to Ishirō Honda’s 1954 original, will be stomping onto Netflix next month.

While Godzilla Minus One is currently available to stream in all its full Oscar-winning glory, Godzilla Minus Color will hit the streamer on August 1.

Starring Ryunosuke Kamiki, Sakura Ando, Minami Hamabe and Hidetaka Noshioda, Godzilla Minus One followed a failed kamikaze pilot and a group of civilians trying to defend a ravaged Japan from the radiation-breathing beast.

According to Yamazaki himselfGodzilla Minus Color is so much more than just switching filters:

“Rather than just making it monochrome, it is a cut by cut. I had them make adjustments while making full use of various mattes, as if they were creating a new movie. What I was aiming for was a style that looked like it was taken by masters of monochrome photography. We were able to unearth the texture of the skin and the details of the scenery that were hidden in the photographed data. Then, a frightening Godzilla, just like the one in the documentary, appeared. By eliminating color, a new sense of reality emerges. Please live and resist further fear at the theater.”

Need we remind you: Godzilla Minus One made a hugely impressive $107 million worldwide, including nearly $57 million in North America. The movie was originally supposed to play for just a week in the States but due to sheer demand and strong word of mouth, Toho decided to screen the film for months longer.

Last year, Godzilla Minus One became the first entry in the 70-year-old kaiju franchise to win an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

If you haven’t yet watched Godzilla Minus One (where have you been?!), you can now stream it on Netflix or VOD, and make sure to do the same for Godzilla Minus Color on August 1.
