The new film from Josh Ruben (Scare Me), Werewolves Within is a horror-comedy adaptation of the Ubisoft video game, released into limited theaters this past Friday, June 25.
The IFC film was released in a mere 270 locations, and managed to howl its way to $223,000 at the box office over the weekend. That put it in the #12 spot for the weekend, with the box office at large being led by Fast 9‘s $70 million pandemic record-breaker.
Up next, Werewolves Within is coming to at-home Digital & VOD this Friday, July 2.
In the film…
“After a proposed gas pipeline creates divisions within the small town of Beaverfield, and a snowstorm traps its residents together inside the local inn, newly arrived forest ranger Finn (Sam Richardson) and postal worker Cecily (Milana Vayntrub) must try to keep the peace and uncover the truth behind a mysterious creature that has begun terrorizing the community.”
Josh Ruben says that Werewolves Within is an homage to his love for Hot Fuzz, the Coen Brothers, and Arachnophobia, but notes that “it’s also about the monster in all of us.”
Meagan wrote in her Tribeca review, “It may not keep you warm all winter long, but Josh Ruben’s latest plays like a joyous hug of a comedy-horror movie full of charisma, violent antics, and entertaining character-driven mystery.”
