Kathryn Bigelow’s ‘Near Dark’ Coming Back to Life With New Restoration and Release from Studiocanal
One of my personal favorite movies, Kathryn Bigelow‘s Near Dark was the *other* and arguably *better* vampire movie of 1987, and the bummer there is that the horror-western hybrid has been out-of-print on physical media for several years now. Even worse, Near Dark has been unavailable to stream *anywhere*, making costly DVDs & Blu-rays your only option.
But it looks like that may finally change here in 2021, as the Twitter account @GeekGabNews is reporting that UK label Studiocanal is getting set to bring Near Dark back to life…
According to the account, Near Dark will be making its 4K Ultra HD debut sometime soon, though it’s important to note that this announcement isn’t coming direct from Studiocanal.
From #KathrynBigelow comes a creepy #Vampire film , thrilling western, & a poignant family tale, with humor & scares in abundance when #NearDark debuts on #4KUltraHD via @StudiocanalUK for the first time #4K #4KBluray #4KUHD #UHD #UltraHD #UltraHDBluray #Horror #HorrorCommunity pic.twitter.com/2q0go57BgQ

What’s also important to note, however, is that Studiocanal did confirm earlier this month that Near Dark is being re-released this year. Clips from the film were included in the company’s YouTube video “STUDIOCANAL Catalogue 2021,” which was published on June 2, 2021.
The video’s description reads, “STUDIOCANAL has ramped up ambitious restoration plans to keep one of the largest catalogues in the world up to the latest technical standards. We are thrilled to unveil our trailer showcasing our most recent and awaited re-releases coming soon. Fantastic classics, iconic films, and hidden gems to (re) discover with Studiocanal, stay tuned!”
It’s likely that the release art shared by Geek Gab News is fan-made, using old international art for the movie, but it looks like they’re spot on about an upcoming Studiocanal release.
Stay tuned for more as we learn it.
