I was not a fan of Netflix’s smash hit sci-fi horror Bird Box, in which a mother (played by Sandra Bullock) and her children seek sanctuary from unknown entities that force those who look at them to commit suicide. It was a monster hit, claimed the streamer, who reported more than 89 million streams over the course of its 4-week launch.
Unsurprisingly, a follow-up is on the way, but not in the way you might think. Deadline is reporting that a Spanish-language spinoff is in the works, which would tell the story from a different point of view. In fact, this is the first spinoff in a planned franchise that could go global.
The movie will reunite Netflix with Bird Box producers Dylan Clark (The Batman) and Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw), but it will also have a distinctly Spanish flavor, adds the site.
“Writer-directors will be Spanish duo Alex and David Pastor, best known for 2020 Netflix thriller The Occupant and 2009 pandemic thriller Carriers, as well as Syfy series Incorporated and recent HBO Max series The Head, both of which they created.”
The yet-to-be-titled spinoff is due to start production towards the end of this year in Spain.
“Producing for Spanish outfit Nostromo Pictures will be Adrián Guerra and Núria Valls, producers of The Occupant and Spanish hit The Invisible Guest. Guerra is also well known as the producer of Ryan Reynolds box office breakout Buried.”
