‘Dead County’ Throws Back to More PS1-Era Survival Horror Goodness

Sure, Daymare: 1998 was a good modern fan-made take on classic Resident Evil 2, but what about those of us who want the good old days of low-poly characters and tank controls? Never fear, as Blake McKinnon has something for you in Dead County. Available for free on itch.io, Dead Country is a survival horror game that checks all the boxes from PS1 horror classics like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, while also throwing in the granddaddy of them all, Alone in the Dark.

Dead County has you playing as a delivery driver who, after an accident involving his van and one of the undead, has to make his way home through a town overrun by zombies. Just like during the height of the survival horror boom, the game uses tank controls (hold a button to aim, press a button to fire, etc.), fixed camera angles, and has a heavy emphasis on inventory management. The game even throws in a nod to the first Resident Evil game (somewhat) with the bad voice acting, but it’s more “muh muh muhmuhmuh” than actual words.

Seriously though, if you’re looking for that “blast from the past” feeling, Dead County is definitely going to give that to you.
