Shudder announced today they will be bringing writer/director Issa López‘s award-winning film Tigers Are Not Afraid (read our review) to theaters in the U.S. and Canada. It will open August 23rd, 2019, in New York City, Los Angeles, and Toronto via theatrical partner Variance Films, with an expansion to follow in September, prior to the film’s debut on Shudder.
“The stories of these children fighting for survival just across the border, and the dreams and nightmares that follow them, is one that needs to be told now more than ever,” said López.
The film is a haunting horror fairytale set against the backdrop of Mexico’s devastating drug wars and follows a group of orphaned children armed with three magical wishes, running from the ghosts that haunt them and the cartel that murdered their parents.
Tigers Are Not Afraid has won wide acclaim during a festival run that began at Austin’s renowned Fantastic Fest, where López won Best Horror Director, and has gone on to win over 50 additional awards at other festivals. In its native Mexico, the film was nominated for ten Ariel Awards with two wins, and received nine Diosas de Plata nominations with three wins. Furthermore, the film has garnered praise from masters of the genre including Guillermo del Toro, Stephen King, and Neil Gaiman.
