Director Cathy Yan had stated right off the bat that she intended for the Margot Robbie-led Birds of Prey to be a rated “R” film, and though that had subsequently been called into question, a new story in Vogue this week (reported by Indiewire) suggests that we’ve got nothing to be worried about on that front.
The Vogue piece notes that Birds of Prey is definitely an “R-rated superhero action film.”
Robbie, who is playing Harley Quinn in the film, notes in the piece, “I think there’s a perception that a PG female-led action film is kind of considered a chick flick.”
Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell will be starring alongside Robbie. Winstead will play Huntress, with Smollett-Bell as Black Canary. Rosie Perez is playing Renee Montoya. Ella Jay Basco (“Veep,” “Teachers”) recently joined the cast as Cassandra Cain.
The film’s villain will be Black Mask, played by Ewan McGregor.

Yan directed Birds of Prey from Christina Hodson’s screenplay.
Birds of Prey has been dated for February 7, 2020.
