As far as we’ve seen/heard, Abe Sapien will *not* be appearing in Neil Marshall‘s upcoming Hellboy, the character of course memorably played by Doug Jones in Guillermo del Toro’s two movies. But, for what it’s worth, Jones reveals in a new chat with THR this week that he *was* offered the chance to make a cameo appearance in Marshall’s film.
“There was a chance that a cameo might have happened, but not as things progressed,” Jones told the site. “Reboot means recasting, and I’m told this first reboot does not have anybody in it from the original film. I received an offer to do a cameo, but I was deeply immersed in Star Trek: Discovery when that offer came in, so I couldn’t do it.”
It’s unclear if Jones was offered to cameo as Abe Sapien or as another character, but we can only assume the new franchise will at some point introduce a new Sapien entirely.
David Harbour is Hellboy in the new film, which also features Milla Jovovich as Nimue, the film’s villain; Ian McShane as Professor Broom; Daniel Dae Kim as Major Ben Daimio; Penelope Mitchell as Ganeida; and Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan.
Sophie Okonedo, Brian Gleeson and Alistair Petrie also star.
The new story sees the hero squaring off against a medieval sorceress who seeks to destroy humankind.
Aron Coleite worked on the latest draft of a script by Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin and Mike Richardson are the producers. Hellboy is being exec produced by Christa Campbell, Lati Grobman, and Carl Hampe.
Hellboy returns on April 12, 2019.
