YouTuber Remasters Opening Uncensored Cutscene From ‘Resident Evil’ Using AI

Longtime fans of Resident Evil probably know the story about the first game’s opening cutscene, and how it was chopped for the North American and European releases. And how the Director’s Cut release mistakenly never included the uncut version of it, yet ironically the PC port of the game ended up with the uncut scene when it was released at the same time.

Confused yet?

Anyways, those morbidly curious about seeing this cheesy opening scene have long had YouTube to help them out. But, seeing as this is 1996 we’re talking about, the footage has never been the highest of quality. Until now.

One YouTuber by the name of Marcelus Castle Rain has been able to upscale the original video (along with other cutscenes from games such as Silent Hill and Rule of Rose) via AI Machine Learning, and the results look damn good. Granted, it’s not perfect, but it’s a helluva lot better than what we got from compressed mpeg videos at 640×480 resolution.

Plus, it confirms my suspicion that they dyed the hair of the actor who played Wesker to a ridiculously bright yellow.
