Back in April, Nightdive Studios had announced that in addition to their regular update on their remake of System Shock, they had acquired the source code for the original System Shock: Enhanced Edition, and were planning on releasing it “in the near future”, along with a new version of the Enhanced Edition. Well, that future is now!
The “Source Port Update” of the Enhanced Edition is a free update to all current owners of the game on Steam, and includes some pretty awesome new goodies. Among them:
- higher resolutions (including 4K support)
- full mouselook support
- rebindable keyboard commands
- Direct3D and OpenGL support
- the option to switch between the high-res Mac assets and the original DOS assets
- mod support
- smoother camera rotation
- bug fixes
Really, while we aren’t going to get the remake until 2020, we can at least enjoy the original with some nice additions. Not a bad thing at all. Head to the game’s Steam page and get in on this NOW.
