Jason Blum announced last year that Blumhouse and writer Akiva Goldsman (The Dark Tower) were developing a new adaptation of Stephen King’s Firestarter, which was originally adapted in 1984. We learned that Goldsman would be co-writing the screenplay for the Blumhouse/Universal film with Scott Teems (Rectify), and the project landed a director today.

Variety reports that Fatih Akin (In the Fade) has come aboard as director.

“Based on King’s classic novel, the story follows a young girl who develops pyrokinetic abilities and is abducted by a secret government agency that wants to harness her powerful gift as a weapon.”

Drew Barrymore starred in the 1984 film, directed by Mark L. Lester.

Goldsman will produce along with Jason Blum. Martha de Laurentiis is on board to executive produce.
