Whether or not they resonate, you have to credit the Purge films for tackling social issues head on, and this year’s The First Purge looks to be no exception. Gerard McMurray (Burning Sands) directed the series’ latest installment, a prequel that tells the story of, well, America’s very first Purge Night.
Speaking with Deadline, McMurray touched on the real life inspirations behind his installment.
“Right now we’re living in a time where people are waking up and seeing how things really are and are needing to stand up and voice their opinion,” McMurray told the site. “As a filmmaker, showing those images and putting it out there gave me a voice to acknowledge what was going on and bring some awareness and spark dialogue about it.”
He continued, “We see events that are taking place in this country over the last year. I just tried to use what was going on in the real world and try to bring it into the film. I felt like horror films wrestle with the evils of real life, and that was one of the things I wanted to do with this film. We’re fighting for real injustices [in the film]. I wanted to pay homage [to Black Lives Matter].”

Coming off the most successful film in the series, The Purge: Election Year, creator James DeMonaco (writer/director of The Purge, The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year) returns alongside the producers of this worldwide phenomenon: Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum (Insidious series, Get Out, Split), Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Ouija series, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and DeMonaco’s longtime production partner, Sébastien K. Lemercier (Assault on Precinct 13, Four Lovers).
