The Ranger, directed Jenn Wexler, will world premiere at the upcoming SXSW on Monday, March 12th in the Midnight Section. Turning from PSA to terror, we now have a look at the official trailer that teases the horrors that take place in this National park.
“I was watching tons of ’80s PSAs. Smoky the Bear type PSAs and after-school special type stuff,” Wexler told Heat Vision. She enlisted novelist Ed Kurtz for the voiceover work and used music from punk musician Wade MacNeil, who scored the film.
“When Chelsea and her friends get in trouble with the cops, they flee the city and go on the run. Fueled by a hallucinogenic drug called Echo, they hope to lay low-and get high-in an old family hideout in the woods. But Chelsea’s got reservations about going back to nature and secrets she’s not sharing with her friends. When a shot rings out, her past comes crashing back, and the punks find themselves pitted against the local authority- an unhinged park ranger with an axe to grind.”
Jeremy Holm (“House of Cards”, “Mr Robot”), Chloe Levine (The Transfiguration, The OA), Amanda Grace Benitez (All Cheerleaders Die) star alongside Granit Lahu, Jeremy Pope, and Bubba Weiler star in Larry Fessenden’s Glass Eye Pix and Andrew van den Houten’s Hood River Entertainment film.
Wexler had three movies on the festival circuit as a producer, Robert Mockler’s Like Me which premiered at SXSW 2017, Ana Asensio’s Most Beautiful Island which premiered and won the Grand Jury Prize at SXSW 2017, and Mickey Keating’s Psychopaths. She also produced Keating’s Darling which world premiered at Fantastic Fest and was released in 2016. The Ranger marks her feature directorial debut.
